Know the Law
On December 1, 2010, Wisconsin joined 40 other states in providing a greatly enhanced level of accountability by the profession of massage therapy and bodywork therapy. In short, as of December 1, 2010, to practice in Wisconsin practitioners must get a state license. This landmark law applies whether they do massage therapy or bodywork therapy for compensation or not, unless they qualify for an exemption or their scope of practice in another profession allows them to do massage therapy or bodywork therapy. Wisconsin consumers can check on the license status of a person providing massage therapy or bodywork therapy by going to https://app.wi.gov/licensesearch

Under Wisconsin law a Massage Therapist must:

  • Honestly represent themselves
  • Work within their scope of practice
  • Inform the client if massage is contraindicated/not advised
  • Refer client to appropriate healthcare providers if they cannot provide appropriate services
  • Obtain informed consent before treatment
  • Allow the client's right of refusal, modification or termination the treatment
  • Maintain client records necessary for continuity of treatment for at least 5 years
  • Maintain client confidentiality
  • Provide proper draping for privacy and safety
  • Not engage in sexual behavior with or in the presence of a client
  • Maintain cleanliness in the professional setting
  • Display their Wisconsin License prominently in their place of business or practice
